Gene Serina began his career in music at the age of 13, during the age of Doo Wop, first singing with a group in junior high school which included Eddie Rivera (who would later create one of the first Record Pools, I.D.R.C. (International Disco Record Center). Gene would later meet up with Ruben Mangual, his brother Benji and Jocko on a street corner and this union became the start of what would become "the Group". Ruben & Gene then partnered with Orvin Baptiste, Rick Pettignano and George west and as The Vels they were signed to the Amy Record label and released their first 45rpm single "Do the Walk" / "In Laws". The group eventually changed it's name from the Vels to the Styles.
